Large print word search on a phone
Big letters in the menus are not enough. Here is what makes a word search grid easy to read on a phone screen.
A large print word search is a word search with letters big enough to read without glasses or without straining. On paper, it is a bigger book. On a phone, the screen does not grow, so the game has to make choices.
Big letters in the grid itself
Many apps make the menus bigger when you raise the text size of the phone, and leave the grid as it was. Check the grid, not the menus. In Scrutix, the letters of the grid follow the Text size setting of the app, up to twice the normal size.
A smaller grid rather than smaller squares
A 15×15 grid on a phone has small squares. With large letters, an 8×8 grid with 10 words is easier to read than a crowded 15×15. Scrutix offers three sizes, and at a large text size it serves the grid that still fits with readable squares.
Strong contrast
Dark letters on white squares, with no texture behind them, are the easiest to read. Avoid grey letters and coloured backgrounds. Found words should stay readable once they are marked: in Scrutix, each one gets a light colour and a pattern, and the letters stay dark.
The words to find in large letters too
The list of words matters as much as the grid. If it is long, it does not fit on the screen at a large size. One word at a time shows only the word you are looking for, in very large letters, and can read it aloud.
Nothing that rushes you
A timer, a score or lives make you hurry, and hurrying makes reading harder. Scrutix has none of them. Take the time you need.
